A SURGE in the use of water at Aberdeen and Scone has resulted in water restrictions for both towns.

Upper Hunter Shire Council water and waste manager Duncan Rayward said that during the past week the shire has lost 5 per cent of its water storage a day.

An odds and evens rationing system will start on Monday where odd numbered houses use sprinklers on odd number days and even numbered houses on even days.
