NEWCASTLE Crash Investigation Unit officers are working to determine why a sedan went off the road on a slight right-hand bend and hit a tree, killing two male rear seat passengers at Aberdeen.

A Singleton man, 34, and a Muswellbrook man, 25, were killed when a Toyota Camry Sportivo sedan travelling south on Dartbrook Road shortly after 3am on Saturday left the road and went through a fence before slamming sideways into a large ironbark tree.

The men died at the scene, one of them thrown from the car, and another Muswellbrook man, 28, suffered serious head injuries.

He was believed to be in a serious but stable condition at John Hunter Hospital yesterday.

A Singleton woman, 27, received minor injuries.

Police said last night it appeared the woman was a front-seat passenger and the seriously injured man was the driver.

Senior Constable Heath Boswell said it appeared the car slid sideways onto the wrong side of the road before hitting the fence and tree.

He said it was too early to say what may have caused the single-car accident.
