ATTEMPTS by an Aberdeen group to secure the services of a doctor for the Upper Hunter town appear to have been successful.

Dr Collins Oku-Oleng, who practises in the western NSW town of Condobolin, has told the group of business and community representatives he plans to come to Aberdeen.

He was in Aberdeen at the weekend.

The Aberdeen Progress Association and Chamber of Commerce secretary Lynn Walters said yesterday that the group wanted to refurbish the former medical centre, which was left vacant when medicos withdrew from the town because of a doctor shortage in Scone.

Mrs Walters said volunteers would renovate the old surgery.

Dr Oku-Oleng said he inspected the premises and was "100 per cent" confident he would establish a practice in Aberdeen, probably by February 1.

Members of the group is due to meet federal member for Gwydir and former deputy prime minister John Anderson in Aberdeen tomorrow to discuss several matters, including granting a Medicare provider number for the doctor so he can bulk-bill.
