SOUTH Sydney greats Ron Coote and Bob McCarthy will be special guests at the 85th anniversary reunion of the Aberdeen rugby league club over the June long weekend.

Aberdeen is a foundation club in the Upper Hunter and took part in the first competition in 1920.

Coote's father, Jack, led the Tigers to the 1933 premiership as a player-coach. His famous son was happy to be part of the anniversary celebrations when contacted by organiser Shane Lloyd.

A golden oldies match will be held on the Saturday afternoon with many of the club's former stars taking part.

Former Canterbury, North Sydney and NSW player Keith Harris, 1988 NSW Country player of the year Chris Cumming and premiership-winning coaches Mick Klus, Butch Smith and Troy Logan are likely to take part.

A reunion dinner will be held on Saturday night, which will also feature a presentation of the club's history put together by Lloyd.

Tickets to the dinner are $25. For more information call Shane Lloyd on 6543 7365 or 0409 782 053.

? The Singleton Strikers gave their fans little to cheer about at their first home game of the Northern NSW first-division soccer competition on Sunday, losing 5-1 to West Wallsend.

The second-round game was the first of three straight matches at Howe Park for the Strikers.

They play defending premiers Phoenix, who beat West Wallsend in last year's decider, on Sunday.

? Valley Souths batsman Darren Easterbrook has won the Muswellbrook cricketer of the year.

Easterbrook scored a ton in his team's grand final loss to Denman and compiled close to 1000 runs through the season in representative and club efforts.
