ABERDEEN residents will have access to a full-time doctor when Dr Collins Oku-Oleng opens his practice on January 20.

The news comes as relief to residents who have had to travel to visit a doctor since the Scone Medical Practice withdrew medical services from the town last October.

Dr Oku-Oleng is Ugandan-born and trained.

He has been in Australia for four years and is a naturalised citizen.

Dr Oku-Oleng said he practised medicine with a holistic approach.

"If someone comes to me with the flu, I will not necessarily treat their flu but also look at their diet and lifestyle in an effort to see why they may have got the flu," he said.

Aberdeen Progress Association and Chamber of Commerce secretary Lynn Walters said yesterday that the two groups refurbished the former medical centre to help to attract a new doctor to the area.

The group then offered doctors the opportunity to begin their "own business", without dictated hours and wages.
