THE proposed water pipeline and associated treatment works for Scone and Aberdeen recently received funding as part of the State Infrastructure Strategy, announced in the State Budget.

The Scone and Aberdeen Water Supply Augmentation plan was submitted by the Upper Hunter Shire Council (UHSC). The plan will include more than 15 kilometres of pipeline from the base of Glenbawn Dam to Scone; a treatment plant; and the upgrading of the Aberdeen Backfeed.

The cost of the augmentation is estimated at $16.96 million, with 40 per cent to be funded by the State Government and the remaining 60 funded by the UHSC.

"Council has set aside funds from rates to fund this scheme in conjunction with State Government assistance and additional funds will be sought through council borrowings," said Bede Spannagle, the director of technical services for the UHSC.

In the briefing notes provided by UHSC to the NSW treasurer, Mr Michael Costa, it states that the pipeline is necessary as the current water delivery comes from an ageing system in Aberdeen that is open to evaporation and turbidity.
